Education & Edtech

The Education sector has been overhauled in recent years, embracing technology and behaving like a best-in-class consumer services business.  Edtech companies that offer technology platforms and apps for education and learning are seeing demand soar.

Home schooling has given the edtech sector a strong headwind but companies like Duolingo (the language learning service) were already growing at a pace, as is Quizlet, which trains students via flashcards and games.

The UK is a leader in the field, with its start-ups attracting 41% of all European investment last year (according to data from Tech Nation’s). According to a report from CB Insights, Edtech startups raised an enormous $4.89 billion in 2020. The Top 3 Edtech startups which raised the most globally were China’s Yuanfundao ($1 billion - series G), China’s Zuoyebang ($750 million) and India’s Byju’s ($122 million - backed by Facebook founder - Mark Zuckerberg).

In the UK, Tutorful (a digital marketplace to find and book tutors) now has more than 100,000 students registered and has received further funding to expand and Firefly Learning saw a 13 fold jump in demand during lockdown and now has over one million users.

The edtech market is diverse, from large tech companies, including Google, Amazon, Microsoft, the BBC and Pearson to start-ups in the sector including Show My Homework from Satchel, Lingumi, Learning People, Firefly Learning and Komodo Learning. Edtech has huge potential around the world to democratise access to education and UK companies are well-placed to provide services into this international market.
